Funday Monday

I didn't write about Funday Monday last week because, frankly, it was NOT a fun day. You win some and lose some, right? I think we managed to keep the TV off, but that's all I'm gonna say.

Yesterday was fun. We banned the screens and headed to SLC for a ride on trax and visit to Temple Square. David's sister Leah was still in town from Michigan (she left this morning) and it was her idea.

Ruby and Max were excited to ride "the fast train"

Here are a few pictures from the wedding on Saturday. I just got pics outside the temple. Then I tragically forgot my camera when we went to the reception. I'll try to get pics from someone else because it was so darling.

We had too much fun over the weekend with birthday, wedding, and family.
Now it's Tuesday and I need to catch up on some sewing!

funday monday

Another successful "no screen" Funday Monday.
At least for the kids ... admittedly, they are better at staying away from the TV/computer than I am.
I checked my email a couple times!

But then we spent most of the afternoon at the pool. It was fun and we are all sun-kissed and tired.

I have some projects I'll post about later this week.
For now, I'll leave you with this gem. Dare you not to giggle!

Funday Monday, week 2.

...but I do love seeing them play together!
They played like this for seriously 2+ hours. Miracle!

Week two of Funday Monday (no computer or TV all day).

I'll be honest... I cheated a few times.

Max is the "screen police" and he will catch you fast.
The kids were up before me and turned on the TV before I could remember, but they were agreeable when I reminded them of Funday Monday.
They even tried to tell their neighbor friends that they couldn't watch TV today. ha!

Funday Monday

I read an article in Family Fun magazine that inspired me to get my kids away from TV and computer more often. I wish I could find a link to the article, but it was about a family who went "screen-free" for an entire week. It was an eye-opening experiment and they realized just how much time they wasted in front of the TV or computer. I'll admit to letting them play computer games and watch TV or DVDs way too much. Even in the summer, when they are playing outside a lot, it seems like the are constantly running to or from a screen of some sort!

So, today was our first "screen free" day (until 7pm when I admittedly watched the Bachelorette). And this is the first time all day that I turned on the computer! I wanted to call it something positive rather than "no TV day" so I came up with Funday Monday. The kids were totally into it and were actually excited to see the  papers taped on all the TV and computer screens this morning reminding them of Funday Monday.

I planned to do more, but in the end we spent the majority of the day at home just playing, cleaning, and doing whatever. Then we took an afternoon trip to the library and a few errands. It was probably harder on me because I didn't check my email or facebook all day!

I think anything in moderation is ok, so I'm not really thinking of throwing out the TV completely, but I do like the idea of limiting it!

I found some good links here.

The kids helped me make a list of fun things to do in the summertime ... mostly free or cheap things like swimming, going to museums, parks, library, etc. The only problem was that they thought we'd do all of them today. haha. Now they are saying "let's do Funday Tuesday!"

How do you limit screen time in your house?
What fun things are you doing with your kids this summer?
